No pricey 4x4 required for the Garden Route or the Cape.
For most trips, emphatically yes. Public transport between the sights is limited, distances are long, and the best of the country — the Garden Route, the Winelands, the Cape peninsula — is built for a road trip.
Every rental includes basic cover, but it almost always carries a large excess: the amount you still pay if the car is damaged or stolen. Reduce it with Super CDW or a rate that includes full coverage, and note tyres and windscreen are often excluded.
Cape Town → Hermanus → Knysna → Plettenberg Bay → Tsitsikamma, then loop back or drop the car in Gqeberha as a one-way. Give it 5–7 days — and it's comfortable 2WD territory the whole way.
